Personal Safety

There are two basic types of personal safety.

  1. Our physical safety,
  2. Our material personal possessions safety.

Personal Safety is as much in the back of our minds as is any other daily routine. It's something we need to be aware of all of the time. We try to keep that awareness active during the course of our everyday lives, but with the modern, hectic run-around lifestyle that we live; being aware of ones personal safety is not a priority at all moments of time, especially in situations of stress or emergency. That is when advantage is taken by those who prey on innocent victims.

Personal Safety covers a multitude of items. It not only includes looking out for ourselves, but also for the rest of the family, our friends and the home.

The irony of personal Protection is that we are creatures of habit. Initially we adapt ourselves to new surroundings and take precautions to instill a sense of safety by installing or acquiring systems that will give us that sense of security. However, over time we lose the initial fear and begin to relax. This can translate into careless use of the protective measures we originally installed. This goes for alarm systems, fire systems, key safety, handbag protection and more. The loss of personal documents is a harrowing experience. Endless paperwork, visits to the police station, insurance claims, etc, and heaven forbid this happens in a foreign country!

Protecting our personal items is of utmost importance. We all carry objects of value such as phones, cameras, music players, not to mention money, credit cards and identification etc.
So make today the "Personal Safety Check Day". Write down the details of your valuable possessions and store the list in a safe place you can remember! Even send a copy to a family member and ask them to do the same. Take note of all your credit cards details and file them in a safe place or on a password protected file on your computer.

Check the house for all security and fire measures, and if you feel uncomfortable about some aspects, make a point of doing something about it. It might seem a small thing, but if it sets of even a little concern, you should seriously consider doing it. Prevention is better than cure.
