Protect yourself
How can you protect yourself? - A few ideas that could help!
There are many areas of personal protection. The most obvious are at our homes or out in unsavoury neighbourhoods. There are particularly vulnerable times such as when we are on holidays or in unfamiliar situations - rushed or stressed or in crowds.
Each example requires the same basics of personal awareness of the surroundings and ongoing events, and an adapted awareness for the individual circumstances.
Too often, in the most relaxed and secure environments such as our homes, our antennae for recognizing danger is least active. It is therefore important to have additional security take over for us.
A few hints at home:
- Install electronic and physical protection. There are many economic systems available…
- Install Video boxes that give the impression of camera surveillance.
- Post Alarm stickers to warn potential intruders.
- Get home content and personal injury insurance.
- Check all windows and entry areas before leaving.
- Use automatic light sources that turn on as darkness falls.
- Leave a radio or music playing.
- Lock doors when in another part of the house
A few hints when going away:
- Have someone pick up your mail each day.
- Use automatic internal lights which come on at night.
- Don't leave messages on your answering machine to say you are going away.
In the streets a lot depends on how familiar you are with the area, times of day and any particular danger spots. In any case always be vigilant, even if it is a daily routine.
If you carry any self-defensive items such as KAMALERT, be sure to have them “at the ready”, and if you are in a danger area or a potentially vulnerable situation, have “your finger on the button”.
A few hints when on holidays and trips to unfamiliar places or countries:
Be especially aware of the types of crimes that may occur where you are visiting, and any rough or danger spots. Check it out on the Internet.
- Don't put your wallet in your back pocket; if in a crowded area put it in your side pocket.
- Use a secure shoulder bag, rather than a handbag.
- Avoid walking around with valuable jewellery showing.
- When you go to the beach just take a little cash.
- Take only one credit card with you on the street.
- Don't take your credit cards with you when you are going out, if you don’t need them
Stay safe and well,
